Each Bud’s BFF preservation pad is saturated with one gram of BHT. BHT is a powerful and safe antioxidant for lipids. The BHT continuously sublimates off of the preservation pad placed at the top of the storage container. Sublimation is a change in state from a solid to a gas. Dry ice is the best known example of a substance that sublimates. This gas is much denser than air and sinks down and surrounds the cannabis flower. BHT is lipophyllic, which means it is attracted to the lipids in the cuticle of the trichome. BHT protects the lipids in the cuticle from oxidizing. The cuticle of the trichome being protected from oxidation preserves the cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids inside the trichome. If BHT is not present, the lipids in the cuticle oxidize leading to degradation of the trichome. If the trichome degrades then the cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids inside the trichome degrade as well.
The United States Food and Drug Administration classifies BHT as a generally recognized as safe (GRAS) food preservative.
