How Does It Preserve?

First, we need to understand what part of the cannabis flower contains the cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids in order to understand how Buds BFF preservation pads work. We have all noticed that quality fresh buds seem to have a lot of tiny crystals all over them. These crystals are shiny, sticky and have that fantastic aroma that we all associate with high quality cannabis.

If the crystals are examined in more detail one would notice that all those thousands of crystals are trichomes. Trichomes are the factories where all the cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids are produced and stored in a part of the trichome called the extracellular storage cavity. The extracellular storage cavity’s contents are protected from oxidation and loss by a waxy cuticle layer. This waxy cuticle layer is made up of lipid polymers impregnated with waxes. If the cuticle remains intact the cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids stay protected. The best way to preserve the cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids is to protect this waxy cuticle layer from oxidation and damage. This is where our patent pending pad gets involved. Our preservation pads significantly slow the oxidation of the lipids in the cuticle layer keeping the waxy cuticle layer intact so it can protect for longer.

Our preservation pads are saturated with a FDA approved food preservative called BHT. BHT is a powerful antioxidant especially for lipids. Our test samples consisted of 3.5 grams of cannabis flower that was stored in a one quart mason jar with and without a Buds BFF pad. We purposefully chose a one quart container with a small amount of cannabis to prove the effectiveness of Buds BFF preservation pads up to a one quart container size. Cannabinoid profile testing was done by Grace Analytical Lab, Inc. using the sample drop off date for the number of days stored. After 45 days there was no loss of cannabinoids for the cannabis flower stored using Buds BFF preservation pads when compared to the initial testing results. There was significant loss of cannabinoids for the cannabis flower stored without Buds BFF preservation pads. For example, cannabis stored without Buds BFF lost 22.3 % of the total THC after 45 days (Total THC =THCa +THC). After 90 days of storage the samples stored using Buds BFF preservation pads had a total THC value 20.9% higher than the samples stored without Buds BFF. Results improve with a more appropriately sized container for the amount of flower stored. This is why we picked the name Buds Best Friend Forever.
